1) When an author is presenting an assertion (e.g. position, argument, etc.) in the context of a specific purpose, why is it vital that she/he have an explicit awareness of her/his audience? Why is it important for authors to consider the diverse characteristics of their audience? (i.e. think about different manifestations of identity including age, gender, education, religion/non-religion, political views, socioeconomic status, race and ethnicity, etc.). 2) In the essay “The Case Against Tipping” (20), what could Lewis do to make his argument more rhetorically effective? What different rhetorical appeals/strategies could Lewis emphasize or integrate into his discussion to be more rhetorically appealing?
