How to write an article critique

One of the papers that you may be required to write in your academic journey is an article critique. A critique in this sense is more than pointing out the inadequacy of the research by generally analyzing various aspects of the journal articles. Below are some of the main tips that you need to know when writing a journal article critique:

  1. Introduction

The basis of the study could be based on the instructions given from your lecturer or simply from a general topic. The journal articles consist mainly of the introduction to the research, literature review, methodology, discussion and conclusion. Therefore, it is important to understand what the articles seek to address and make mental notes of the main points. Start by mentioning the article you are critiquing and the author. State the central argument of the article and then explain the contextual background. Conclude the introduction by stating the basis on which you are going to analyze the paper.

  1. Summarize the main points

It is critical to make notes when studying the articles and list down the main points and argument of the article. After the introduction, summarize the main points of the article and highlight the main sections of the paper like the literature used and the significance of the methods of inquiry. It should be short, simple and straight forward.

  1. Write the critical analysis

This is the main section of the critique and consists of the major analysis of the different aspects covered in the paper. The critique should start by identifying the purpose of the article and the main idea or arguments. The evaluation should consider how convincing the arguments presented in the article are.

Present the assumptions, the significance and applicability, and make clear comparison with other existing theories or research. Proceed to give a response to the issues that you have highlighted. Therefore, your response should present your assessment of the article, these are; the main concerns of the paper and some of the issues that it does not adequately address. Remember that an article review does more than just focus on the negative aspects of the paper but also highlights the positive.

  1. Conclusion

The conclusion of an article review is usually very short and straight to the point. It includes a statement summarizing the general evaluation of the critique. Summarize the key aspects identified in the critique, giving the justification for the points. You can also give suggestion on the areas that may need improvement.

  1. Reference List

In the reference list ensure that you include all the sources that you have used in the critique. You should ensure that you follow the format that has been given by your instructor.
